Problem

Once a matchday incident is logged and closed, it sits in the incident logging tool or a debrief note and nothing more happens to it. Nobody goes back across a season of records to check whether the same problem keeps recurring, because doing that by hand means opening every incident, cross-referencing it against that day's kickoff time, opponent and attendance, and building the comparison in a spreadsheet nobody has time to maintain. A crowding point that clusters on Friday evening fixtures, or an ejection pattern that keeps turning up in one stand, gets re-diagnosed from scratch by whoever is on duty when it happens again. The debrief calls it a one-off. The run sheet gets a note. Three fixtures later the same category of incident appears in the same zone, and nobody notices because nobody laid the last ten side by side.

Product idea

An assistant that reads closed incident records together with the fixture conditions recorded for that matchday, such as kickoff time, day of week, opponent type, attendance band and gate configuration. It clusters incidents by category and zone, flags combinations that occur more often than the baseline for that condition, and for each cluster returns the specific incident records behind it, not just a count. Output is a ranked list an operations manager reviews ahead of the next fixture matching the same conditions, each entry stating the pattern, the evidence and a confidence level rather than a firm conclusion. It does not action anything automatically, does not run during a live match, and does not diagnose structural or safety-certificate matters. Those stay with the safety officer.

Possible first version

A first version that takes a manually exported CSV of closed incidents (category, zone, time, description) and a small manually entered table of fixture conditions such as kickoff time, day, opponent type and attendance band, then runs frequency and clustering analysis and returns a ranked pattern list with linked incident references. No integration with the incident logging tool or competition management platform in version one. Both are exported and entered by hand. No live, in-match alerting and no automatic actioning: every output is a candidate for human review, not a decision.

Questions we get asked

How many matchdays of history do we need before the patterns mean anything?

It depends on how often incidents occur and how consistently they have been categorised. A handful of fixtures is rarely enough to separate a real pattern from noise; something closer to a full season is a more realistic starting point. If incident categories or zones have been recorded inconsistently, the tool will surface that inconsistency before it surfaces anything useful about your venue. Cleaning up how incidents are categorised is often the actual first step, not a side effect.

Does this replace the incident logging tool the control room already uses on matchday?

No. Incidents still get logged in whatever tool or process you use today, in real time, during the match. This sits downstream of that and only looks at records once they are closed. If your incident log is inconsistent or incomplete, this tool inherits that problem rather than fixing it, so the value depends on how good the underlying logging already is.

Our safety team already knows where our trouble spots are. What does this actually add?

Probably not much if the pattern is already well understood and acted on. Where it adds something is the pattern nobody has consciously joined up: an incident category that only spikes under a specific combination of conditions, or a slow drift across a season that no single matchday debrief would show. It gives that suspicion an evidence trail of the actual incident records behind it, useful when arguing for a change in resourcing or layout.

What happens if a pattern it finds touches something safety-certificate related?

It flags the pattern and the evidence behind it to whoever reviews the output, normally the operations manager or safety officer. It does not interpret the safety certificate, does not state whether anything is compliant, and does not decide what changes. Anything touching certificate conditions or structural matters is a judgement for the safety officer, not an output this tool is designed to make on its own.
