A proposal from SportsFirst. This is a proposed commercial activation layer supported by an existing live-camera feed model — not a description of a shipped product. Streaming cost and delivery figures would be established through a live pilot rather than assumed.
1. The Opportunity
Sports organisations and broadcasters often already have live point-of-view camera feeds running throughout a fixture, but only selected moments reach the main broadcast. The remaining feed has no dedicated fan destination, no commercial wrapper and no measurable activation attached to it.
At the same time, commercial teams need sponsorship inventory that goes beyond passive logo placement and gives brands clear evidence of fan attention, interaction and response. A logo is proof that a brand was present. It is not proof that a supporter engaged with it.
The opportunity usually stalls between the broadcast, digital and partnerships teams. The feed exists, but nobody owns the complete journey from live video to sponsor activation, fan participation, consent capture and post-event reporting. Meanwhile the rights holder is paying to point a camera at something and showing almost none of it to fans.
The concept turns that under-used always-on feed into a repeatable commercial package around footage the organisation already controls: a free exclusive second-screen angle for fans, measurable engagement for sponsors, and a new inventory line for the commercial team.
2. What We Propose to Build — With You
We propose a browser-based sponsor-activation layer built around a live POV camera feed.
During the broadcast, viewers see a short prompt and a QR code for an exclusive camera angle presented by the sponsor. Scanning it opens a branded mobile web experience — with no app download and no payment.
Inside the experience the fan can watch the live POV feed, answer a prediction, join a poll, complete a quiz or unlock a sponsor reward. Where the fan chooses to opt in, their information and engagement are captured with explicit consent.
The commercial team manages the activation through a portal that controls sponsor branding, the interaction format, the reward, the fixture and the publishing settings. After the event, the sponsor receives reporting covering audience reach, viewing, participation, opt-ins and reward activity.
The design aims for four outcomes:
- New commercial inventory. Turn an existing feed into a sellable, sponsor-branded activation rather than capex on a fan app.
- A light fan journey. Reach the live feed through a browser on scanning a QR code, without an account, an install or payment details.
- Measurable sponsor value. Demonstrate attention, interaction and response rather than placement.
- Consented audience capture. Collect contact or preference information only where a fan actively opts in for a clear benefit.
3. Why This Problem, Why Now
The feed already exists
Venues and broadcasters routinely operate specialist cameras and encoders. The marginal cost of distributing one more angle is low next to its commercial value. Yet when a POV feed is not on the main broadcast, it defaults to an archive file or an internal monitor instead of an asset the fan can use.
Sponsorship expectations are moving beyond placement
Commercial partners increasingly want to show that supporters actively participated — that they watched, answered, predicted or redeemed — rather than only that a logo was seen. A second-screen activation built around an exclusive angle gives sponsors an evidence trail that a static sign cannot.
Browser-delivered live video crossed a usability threshold
Streaming an interactive live experience through a mobile web page is now realistic without a native app. That removes the single biggest barrier to a fan taking part: the requirement to download and install something before seeing the feed.
Rights holders need repeatable packages, not one-off builds
The value of commercial inventory depends on being able to sell the same activation shape for several fixtures. An activation layer with configurable branding, formats and rewards is the difference between a product and a one-off production.
4. The Foundation
SportsFirst builds custom software for sports organisations and works as a technology services partner rather than a product vendor. A live-feed activation layer builds on infrastructure the organisation already operates: POV cameras and venue encoders, RTSP-format feed delivery, live-streaming and content-delivery infrastructure, and the broadcast graphics systems that already present prompts to viewers.
The compromise for a first pilot is deliberately small: ingest one encoded live feed, wrap it in a branded mobile web player, and attach one interaction format and one reward workflow. This keeps the pilot narrow enough to measure whether fans scan, watch and interact before any larger build.
5. How the Platform Would Work
Step 1 — Configure the activation
The commercial team creates the activation in a portal: sponsor logo, colours, campaign message and offer, the interaction format (poll, prediction or quiz), the reward, the fixture and the publishing window. Everything reusable is saved so a second fixture is a clone rather than a rebuild.
Step 2 — Publish the entry point
A QR code and short link are generated for the sponsor-presented exclusive angle. The broadcaster displays the prompt and QR code at agreed moments in the main broadcast. Fans scan and land on the branded mobile web experience.
Step 3 — Serve the live feed
The encoded POV feed is ingested and delivered through live-streaming and content-delivery infrastructure to the fan's browser. The fan watches the exclusive angle without installing an app or entering payment details.
Step 4 — Run the interaction
Fans answer a prediction, join a poll or complete a quiz tied to the live moment. Interaction results are recorded live and shown where the campaign allows.
Step 5 — Capture consent and rewards
Where the fan chooses to opt in, information and engagement are captured with explicit consent and tied to the promised reward. A reward or coupon-delivery workflow returns the benefit the fan was offered.
Step 6 — Control the window
Operational controls open and close the experience around the fixture, so the activation cannot run outside its agreed slot.
Step 7 — Report to the sponsor
After the event the sponsor receives reporting covering audience reach, viewing, participation, opt-ins and reward activity. The rights holder controls which data the sponsor sees and under what consent terms.

Final component boundaries would be set with the broadcast producer and commercial lead in the room. This is a starting proposal, not a fixed design.
7. Scenarios We'd Target Together
The matchday second screen
A club runs a sponsor-presented exclusive camera angle during a fixture. Fans scan a QR code from the main broadcast, watch the POV feed and answer a score or outcome prediction linked to the live moment. The sponsor receives a report of scans, unique viewers, average viewing time, prediction participation and reward activity.
The sponsor trivia activation
A commercial partner funds a short fixture-linked quiz around the exclusive angle. Fans who complete it may enter a draw or unlock an offer. Reporting separates campaign participation from marketing consent so the sponsor receives only what it is permitted to receive.
Poll and vote activation
Sponsors sponsor a live poll — player of the match, best moment, next kit — presented at a broadcast cue. Results are shown inside the experience and the sponsor sees interaction participation and completion rather than impressions.
Reward and coupon activation
A fan completes an interaction and opts in to receive a sponsor reward. The workflow issues a coupon or offer, records the claim and tracks redemption, giving the sponsor a clear conversion story from feed to action.
Post-event sponsor reporting
After the fixture the rights holder assembles a campaign report covering reach, viewing, participation, opt-ins and reward activity — agreed measures rather than reconstructed screenshots, so renewal conversations can be based on the same numbers each time.
8. Audience and Consent Data
The platform should not force every fan to identify themselves to watch. Anonymous viewing and interaction data can be measured without a profile.
Contact or profile information should only be collected where the fan actively opts in, understands what they are agreeing to, and receives the promised reward or benefit. The rights holder and sponsor must agree before launch:
- Who controls the information
- How it will be used
- How long it will be retained
- How the fan can withdraw consent
Where sponsor contact permission is needed, it should be presented as a clear and separate choice from attending or interacting with the activation. A fan should be able to enjoy the exclusive angle without surrendering data they are not comfortable sharing.
9. Analytics and Sponsor Reporting
The pilot should be judged on a small set of agreed measures rather than a large dashboard:

The objective is not simply to prove the stream works. It is to establish the real delivery cost and to determine whether the experience creates repeatable commercial value for the rights holder and sponsor. That cost figure — the actual spend of streaming one feed to the expected audience — is the number the commercial package is built on.
10. Roles and Governance
The principal internal owners would be the commercial director, the partnerships manager, the digital product lead and the broadcast producer.
A production activation could involve:
- Commercial director — owns the inventory and the commercial proposition.
- Head of partnerships / sponsorship activation manager — configures the sponsor-funded package and its branding.
- Digital product manager — owns the fan-facing experience and publishing.
- Broadcast producer — owns the feed ingest and the broadcast prompt moments.
- CRM or marketing manager — manages consented data and any follow-up to opted-in fans.
- Data protection or legal lead — signs off consent wording, data use and retention, and the sponsor data-sharing arrangement.
Every material action that changes the consent wording, reward terms or published campaign should be attributable to a named user.

The exact requirements would depend on the launch jurisdiction, the fan audience, the sponsor category and the fixture.

The platform would support compliance workflows, but the rights holder remains responsible for approving consent wording, reward terms, sponsor eligibility and jurisdiction-specific requirements.
12. How the System Would Integrate
- Cameras and venue encoders. The live POV feed is delivered from the source with the format and latency agreed with the production team.
- Live-streaming infrastructure. The ingested feed is encoded and delivered to fans in the browser through content-delivery infrastructure, with access control around the activation window.
- Broadcast graphics. The main broadcast displays the QR code and prompt at agreed moments; the integration is small and tested with the production team before an event.
- CRM and email platforms. Consented fans can be transferred to an agreed audience where the fan has opted in and the rights holder allows it.
- Consent-management systems. Opt-in records, timestamps and withdrawal handling align with the organisation's existing consent tooling.
- Coupon and reward platforms. The reward workflow issues and records coupons or offers, and tracks redemptions.
- Analytics. Aggregated activation events flow to the organisation's existing reporting environment for sponsor-facing numbers.
The first pilot should use the narrowest version of these integrations needed to run one fixture, one feed and one sponsor.
13. Proposed Delivery Plan
The delivery period depends heavily on the format and stability of the source feed, the streaming provider, the expected audience, consent requirements and whether an existing rewards or coupon system must be integrated.
Phase 1 — Scope and feed validation (Weeks 1-2)
Sessions with the broadcast producer, commercial lead and data protection or legal lead. Confirm the feed source, format, latency, audio availability and rights position. Agree the interaction format, reward, consent wording and the success measures before any build.
Phase 2 — Activation build (Weeks 3-7)
Build the activation portal, feed ingest and streaming delivery, mobile-responsive browser player, QR code and short-link generation, one interaction format, consent and contact capture, one reward or coupon workflow, and a basic reporting dashboard. Include operational controls for opening and closing the experience.
Phase 3 — Production rehearsal (Weeks 8-9)
Test the full path with the production team ahead of a real fixture: feed ingest, encoding and delivery; the broadcast prompt and QR code; the fan journey on real devices against expected audience load; and the export of activation and consent records.
Phase 4 — Live pilot (Weeks 10+)
Run the pilot across one fixture, one live POV feed and one sponsor. Collect the agreed measures — scan, viewing, interaction, opt-in and reward activity plus the actual streaming cost — and review sponsor feedback as the basis for a standard commercial package.
Out of scope for the pilot: a native mobile app, multiple simultaneous camera angles, advanced replay controls, automated CRM journeys, complex loyalty programmes and a large library of activation templates.

Why would a fan open a second screen?
The experience needs to offer something the main broadcast does not: an exclusive perspective, an interaction linked to the live moment or a relevant reward. The journey must also be extremely light. A viewer should be able to scan a QR code and enter the experience in their browser without creating an account, installing an app or entering payment details before seeing the feed. The first pilot should test this assumption rather than treating fan demand as guaranteed.
Does this require changing the main broadcast workflow?
The intended first version keeps the change small. The broadcaster needs to display a QR code or short prompt at agreed moments. The separate POV feed is then ingested and distributed through the activation platform. The exact integration should still be tested with the production team before an event. Feed format, latency, rights, audio availability and graphics approval can materially affect the experience.
Who pays for the platform?
The fan watches without paying. The activation is packaged as commercial inventory funded by a sponsor, rights holder or both. The commercial proposition might be sold for one fixture, a group of fixtures or an entire season. The pilot should establish the real delivery cost before a standard commercial package is created.
What audience information can be collected?
Watching the exclusive angle should never require a fan to hand over personal details. Anonymous viewing and interaction can be reported on without an identity.
